What Leadership Is Made Of – Insights from Over 50 Interviews
Over the past 12 months, I’ve interviewed more than 50 top leaders:
• 38 successful CEOs
• 15 world-class athletes
• 6 groundbreaking artists
As the host of the interview series Flash⚡️Talk, presented by smzh, I speak with outstanding individuals who share their unique stories, experiences, and visions with us. These short, to-the-point conversations offer powerful insights into leadership, entrepreneurship, and personal success strategies – compact and straight to the heart.
Leadership Is Not a Glossy Product
Leadership is anything but smooth or flawless. On the contrary – it’s an unpredictable roller coaster that requires courage for the loopings. Leadership doesn’t mean having all the answers – it means navigating complexity, staying capable in uncertainty, and growing through challenges.
Across my 50+ conversations with CEOs, entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, board members, and founders, one thing quickly became clear: My guests didn’t just want to talk about their moments of glory – they wanted to shine a light on the dark side of leadership. The flip side of the coin, which – surprisingly – often turns out to be the key to success.
Because the strongest leaders aren’t the ones who never stumble. They’re the ones who have the courage to keep going – no matter what. They use setbacks as catalysts for growth. They don’t shy away from adversity but turn it into a springboard for better leadership. Sometimes it even seems like the adrenaline rushes that come with those moments are exactly what ignite their unique leadership drive.
Many of these powerful insights were shared off-camera. But what truly impressed me was the honesty with which many also spoke on-camera about their less glamorous moments – about uncertainty, wrong decisions, and self-doubt. That’s what makes these conversations not only deeply human, but incredibly instructive for anyone who leads – or wants to lead. That honesty is a gift to the audience – and a source of invaluable experience.
The 4 Most Striking Leadership Insights:
-
Everyone has wanted to quit at some point – even the very best.
Even top leaders face moments when it all feels like too much. The difference? They keep going anyway. -
The role often feels one size too big.
True leaders are willing to grow into their role – step by step, through every mistake and every decision. -
Being in the spotlight caught everyone off guard.
Visibility brings pressure – and many are unprepared for it. -
At a certain level, no one tells you the truth anymore.
Honest, unfiltered feedback becomes rare – and all the more valuable. It takes conscious effort to create spaces where it can happen.
When you get to absorb so many perspectives, experiences, and lessons, you develop a profound sense of what leadership truly means today: humanity, courage, and the ability to provide direction in complex times. It’s a continuous process – defined by authenticity, bravery, and the strength to lead through uncertainty.
Because leadership doesn’t start in the corporate boardroom. It shows up wherever people lead with vision, integrity, and commitment – especially when things get uncomfortable.
